SEPTIC TANKS:

The purpose of the septic tank is to separate the water from the solids. The solids remain in the tank and need to be pumped out every 3 years.  Septic tanks can have 1, 2, or 3 lids. The newer lids can either be green or black. Some older septic tank have no visible lids.

ALARM POSTS:

Alarm posts are installed as part of a septic system when the system has some type of pump or control panel. The purpose of the alarm post is to notify the owner of a problem with the septic system.

This is a picture of an alarm post. It was installed next to a tank.

DISCHARGE PIPE FROM A SEPTIC SYSTEM

You most likely have a discharge pipe if you have one of the following systems: Sand Filter, Peat Filter, COCO Filter, Waterloo Biofilter, or Air Treatment System.  Iowa septic rules require water testing by a laboratory if you have an open discharge pipe.

This is a picture of a discharge pipe. The wastewater that has been processed by the septic system exits here.

COCO FILTER & PEAT FILTER SEPTIC SYSTEMS

This system uses a septic tank plus a filter tank. The septic tank processes the solids, while the filter tank filters the water. These systems generally have an open discharge and will require future water sampling. Learn More

SAND FILTER SEPTIC SYSTEMS

A sand filter septic system includes a septic tank to process the solids followed by a buried sand filter to process the septic water. Sand filter systems usually have an open discharge and will require water sampling and test annually. Sand filters are completely buried below ground. The way to identify a sand filter is by seeing the vent pipe. Some have one vent pipe, and some have two vent pipes.

This is a picture of a sand filter. The actual filter is completely below ground. The vent pipe will be visible at the surface.

WATERLOO BIOFILTER SEPTIC SYSTEMS

A Waterloo Biofilter septic system includes a septic tank to process the solids followed by one or more biofilter tanks to process the septic water. These systems generally require a pump tank that pumps the water up to the biofilter.

MOUND SEPTIC SYSTEMS:

A Mound septic system includes a septic tank to process the solids followed by a mound to process the septic water. There are lateral pipes and special rock located inside the mound that processes the wastewater. A pump and pump-tank is generally needed to pump the water up and into a mound system.

This is a picture with a septic tank, followed by a pump tank, followed by an alarm post. In the background there’s a mound filter.

In this picture of a mound system you'll see a grassy swell in the middle of the picture. This is the mound filter.

AERATION TREATMENT SEPTIC SYSTEMS - ATUs:

The aeration treatment unit is a self-contained treatment tank. The tank contains a central aeration chamber, fixed media filtration compartment, and settling chamber. These systems also have some type of motor that runs the aerator.  Current septic rules require a septic tank and small sand filter be installed with Aeration Septic Systems. Many Aeration systems are still in operation that have only the Aeration Tank.
